About Handi-Care Intl.
Empowering Lives with Dignity and Independence
Above all else
About Handi-Care Intl.
Handi-Care Intl. (HCI) is a Canadian registered non-profit organization dedicated to empowering children, youth, and adults with disabilities—helping them lead independent, dignified, and productive lives.
Our roots are deeply connected to the inspiring work of two extraordinary individuals, S. Ramakrishnan and Sankara Raman, who—despite their own disabilities—created a thriving community for others with special needs. Their vision, resilience, and unwavering commitment led to the establishment of Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA) in Tamil Nadu, India.
Amar Seva Sangam is a unique, comprehensive rehabilitation and education center that today serves over 600 villages in rural and developing regions of India, providing early intervention, rehabilitation, education, vocational training, and long-term care for persons with disabilities.
Our Mission
We are committed to
Supporting disadvantaged children and youth with special needs through education, rehabilitation, and vocational training
Empowering individuals with disabilities to integrate into the mainstream community with confidence and independence
Raising awareness and supporting disadvantaged persons, particularly those of South Asian descent
Relieving poverty by providing housing, care, and essential services to persons with disabilities and those who are destitute
Strengthening partnerships with NGOs in India, conducting youth volunteer training, and supporting families in Canada raising children with disabilities
Above all else
Our Beginning in Canada
Handi-Care Intl. was founded in 1992 as a Canadian registered charity by Sulo Krishnamurthy, who recognized the transformative impact of Amar Seva Sangam and committed to supporting its growth and sustainability.
Since then, HCI has expanded its reach—supporting multiple programs and partner organizations while remaining firmly rooted in its original mission of service and inclusion.

What donors usually want to know
When donors give $1, they typically want confidence in three things:- Programs: How much directly funds charitable work (“cents to the cause”)
- Overhead: Administration + fundraising costs that support the work
- Transparency: Clear, comparable reporting
Charitable giving not only supports meaningful causes—it also provides valuable tax benefits.
The Canadian government encourages donations by offering generous tax credits that can help reduce the taxes you owe or increase your refund.- Donations must be made to a Registered Canadian charity to qualify
- Tax credits reduce tax payable, not taxable income
- Spousal donations can be combined on one tax return
- Unused donations can be carried forward for up to five years
- Donations are generally claimable up to 75% of net income
